Makeup in the Delivery Room

You see celebrities and bloggers all over social media looking stunning in their post baby delivery photos, so I thought….why can’t I?  And why don’t I write a blog to share my tips and discoveries…if I feel most like myself and beautiful with a touch of sparkle, why not glam up on the most important day of my life for a photo I will want to treasure forever.

I spent hours watching videos, reading blogs, and trying out long wearing sweat-proof makeup.  I packed a full bag of makeup – including primers, foundation, concealer, eyeshadow palette, eye liner, mascara, brush, bronzer, highlighter, lipstick and setting spray.

A week or two before my due date, I was suggested to start the delivery process early and got a supervised induction (my terminology).  I was told that, depending on the person, the whole process, including delivery, would likely take 24-48hrs.   So before driving to the hospital, I did my makeup and hair with all my makeup finds and headed to the hospital.

After the first 24hrs, there was no baby and I had only started early labour, so I decided to take a shower, freshen up, and reapplied my full face of makeup again (cause let’s be honest, no makeup is going to last and look lovely past 24hrs), threw on my purple sparkly wedding robe, and headband with a bow in my hair.

I was ready to have this baby and look good doing it!

The Power of Makeup: Perception vs Reality

NikkiTutorials created an amazing youtube video called “The Power of Makeup” where she only applied makeup to half her face, showing the power that makeup can have to transform her face.

Her message in the video was that, although we shouldn’t rely on makeup to feel beautiful, there is nothing wrong with wearing alot of makeup, having fun with makeup, and it making you feel more fabulous.

Although I love Nikki’s message and will definitely put up a future post around “makeup shaming” and showing how my glammed up makeup can transform my face (stay tuned!), her video inspired me to take the idea in a different direction…

The Power of Makeup

When I remove my eye makeup at night, I often make the comment, semi-jokingly, to my fiance “goodbye big eyes!”.

When I think of the words “Power of Makeup” – I think about the power makeup has to make me feel more beautiful.  I believe that most women wear makeup to feel more physically attractive by bringing out our favourite features, minimizing our “imperfections”, and adding a pop of colour to our faces.

That being said, there have been times when I felt beautiful after trying out a new fun vibrant eyeshadow look (like Spring Laguna) but worried that it wasn’t “work appropriate”……but then, to my surprised, no one at work noticed anything different.  Was it not as bright or different as I perceived?

As I am not a formally trained makeup artist, I’ve often question – is my daily makeup routine actually making as big of a physical difference as I think…or is it all in my head?  Because I know that I have applied a contour, do I see a much thinner face?  Do I only notice my eyes popping because I know that I applied jewel toned eye shadow?  When I don’t wear makeup, do my eyes actually look noticeably smaller?

So, I wanted to see side-by-side if my typical every day makeup routine actually made me look noticeably different / “more beautiful” or did I perceive a difference because I knew I had applied makeup?

How To: Select Your Bridesmaids

Ck_7--KWUAA5Niw

A couple months ago, I got engaged…yay (future blog to come)!  I knew one of my biggest challenges was going to be selecting my bridesmaids.  I knew my Maid of Honour would be my younger sister (that was a no brainer) and my two best friends would be two of my bridesmaid…but I had to decide if I wanted more, and who it would be.

I’m so blessed to have some amazing friends and a close family…but that also makes it challenging.  It’s tough when you want to do what makes you happy but also “what’s right”, while not offending anyone (well…let’s be honest, you can’t please everyone).

I wanted to share a blog I read today entitled How To: Select Your Bridesmaids. It’s very helpful to anyone in my predicament.  It defines the role of the bridesmaids and guidance about who and what you should consider so that you can feel confident about your decision.  I’d also like to note, that just because someone isn’t your bridesmaid doesn’t mean you can’t give them another honour.

My top 5 favourites are (in no particular order):

1)   Every year, hundreds of new trees grow because of squirrels forgetting where they buried their nuts.

2)   Otters hold hands when they sleep so they don’t float away from one another.

3)   Wayne Allwine and Russi Taylor, who respectively voiced Mickey and Minnie Mouse, were married in real life.

4)   A group of flamingos is called a flamboyance.

5)   There is no angry way to say the word “bubbles.”

What are your favourites?  Are there any other mind-blowing facts that you would add?
