Holiday Makeup Tutorial (with eyeshadow swatches)

For today’s post, I wanted to share with you how I created my December 25th, 2016, makeup look.  When creating this look, I decided to use warm festive colours with a touch of sparkle. I spent the day and night with my family (we went to see a move and then had dinner and played games at my uncle and aunts house)  so I wanted to select products that last all day knowing that I wouldn’t have time for a mid-day touch up.

To prime my face, I first I applied Sheer Transformation Creme by Ole Henriksen all over my face and neck and followed it with Hourglass Mineral Primer Veil on my face.  I then dabbed a bit of all Urban Decay Anti-Aging Eyeshadow Primer on the my eyelids and upwards toward my under eyebrows.

5 Minute Makeup Routine

Let’s be honest, not everyone has 30+ minutes to put on their makeup every day.

I love the artistry of makeup, so I don’t mind getting up a little earlier and spending the extra time to achieve a certain look….that being said, I have the luxury of time…as I don’t have kids.

Mom’s are often so focused on taking care of their kids, that they forget the importance of doing things just for themselves.  Even just spending 5 minutes doing something, like applying makeup, that makes you feel good about yourself can make all the difference in your overall happiness and self-worth.

I’m definitely not saying that women “need” makeup to feel good, however, if you do enjoy putting on makeup and/or just like the way it makes you look….why should you have have to give that up when you have kids?  Well…you don’t with my 5 minute makeup routine.

I’d like to thank my friend Eva Shortt, the owner of Modern Mommy Events, for inspiring this blog!

Pinterest Test #2: Spring Laguna

Another day, another eyeshadow look!

I have been pinning eye makeup looks and tutorials on Pinterest for YEARS but I realized that I haven’t actually tried any of the looks out…so, I’ve decided to challenge myself, by selecting my favourite pins to discover:

  1. If I can create this look with my existing makeup.
  2. If this look works well on my/a different eye shape and/or colour.
  3. How helpful the step by step images are (if any).
  4. What tips can I provide my readers to help you achieve this look.

Today’s challenge…

Today’s challenge is the look to the left entitled “Spring Laguna”.  It’s from MakeupGeek.com by Dressed-in-Mint.  I have a couple MG eye shadows, but decided not to use them as it wouldn’t really be a challenge if I used the exact shadows from the pin, right?

This look was a little out of my comfort zone, as I normally do nudes on my lid and add colour in the crease or under the lash line.  Also, the girl’s eyes are blue and almond shaped and mine are brown and more roundish, so I was unsure how the look would translate.

I was optimistic that the colours would compliment my eye colour – but the big question was “would this be wearable”…I’d never know unless I gave it shot – so I did!

Trying to follow the Pinterest steps, here’s how I created this look:

Pinterest Test #1: Date Night Eyeshadow Tutorial

I have been pinning eye makeup looks and tutorials on Pinterest for YEARS but I realized that I haven’t actually tried any of the looks out on myself yet…they are just sitting in my “Beauty Board” collecting dust (or whatever is equivalent online…).  That’s no good!

So, I’ve decided to challenge myself, over the next couple months, by selecting my favourite pins and trying them out to discover:

  1. If I can create this look with my existing affordable eye makeup?
  2. If this look works well on my/a different eye shape and/or colour?
  3. How helpful are the step by step images (if any)?
  4. What tips can I provide my readers to help you achieve this look?

On to today’s challenge…

Today’s challenge is the look to the left entitled “Date Night Eye Shadow” (although, for me, it’s a spring/summer look that you could wear day and night).

I thought it was the perfect challenge to start with – a quick and easy look with a pop of colour using only 4 shadows + liner + mascara.  There are clear step by step images displaying both brush type and shadow colour.

I was optimistic that this would look lovely with my eye shape and colour as the model has brown eyes like me (plus, purple looks beautiful on all eye colours)!
