Pinterest Test #2: Spring Laguna

Another day, another eyeshadow look!

I have been pinning eye makeup looks and tutorials on Pinterest for YEARS but I realized that I haven’t actually tried any of the looks out…so, I’ve decided to challenge myself, by selecting my favourite pins to discover:

  1. If I can create this look with my existing makeup.
  2. If this look works well on my/a different eye shape and/or colour.
  3. How helpful the step by step images are (if any).
  4. What tips can I provide my readers to help you achieve this look.

Today’s challenge…

Today’s challenge is the look to the left entitled “Spring Laguna”.  It’s from MakeupGeek.com by Dressed-in-Mint.  I have a couple MG eye shadows, but decided not to use them as it wouldn’t really be a challenge if I used the exact shadows from the pin, right?

This look was a little out of my comfort zone, as I normally do nudes on my lid and add colour in the crease or under the lash line.  Also, the girl’s eyes are blue and almond shaped and mine are brown and more roundish, so I was unsure how the look would translate.

I was optimistic that the colours would compliment my eye colour – but the big question was “would this be wearable”…I’d never know unless I gave it shot – so I did!

Trying to follow the Pinterest steps, here’s how I created this look:

IMG_0884 (1)

(1) To my lid, I applied a mix of Jewel Blue by MAC (discontinued) and Mint Condition by Coastal Scents.

(2) To my upper crease, I applied Miss Minney (shimmery reddish colour) from Sephora’s Minnie’s World in Color Eyeshadow Palette.  And then blended, and blended, and blended.

(3) I applied Busted (cool dark brown shimmery colour) from Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette my crease.

(4) To the outer V of my eyelid, I applied 100 Strokes from MAC (very dark satiny plumish colour).

(5) I used Miss Minney  again from Sephora’s Minnie’s World in Color Eyeshadow Palette and applied it under my lower lash line

(6) I lined my bottom lash waterline with HoneyDude liner by Colourpop (creamy nude).

(7) Lastly, I applied Illamasqua** liquid eyeliner in Abyss along my upper lashline and Smashbox Full Exposure mascara (jet black volumizing and lengthening mascara) to my top and bottom lashes. ** I would suggest using NYX Matte Liquid Liner instead.  The Illamasqua one became stiff,  slightly cracked, and a little uncomfortable after drying.

The Reveal

IMG_0431I was shocked at how much I liked this look!  I did feel a little “over done” (ie. too much eye shadow for a daytime look) but that was just a comfort zone thing…

Although she provided a step-by-step guide, I didn’t find it super clear (ie. step 4 & 5 in the original image appeared to just be blending and more blending steps). Because of this, as I’m sure you’ve noticed, my crease is much redder then that of the original photos.   I wasn’t sure how/when to add the cooler toned grey shadow, so I didn’t...that being said, I love the contrast between the rust/red and the turquoise/teal colour .

Application Tips

  • Don’t have the perfect shade?  Mix up what you have!  I didn’t have the perfect light shimmery turquoise so I mixed up a matte medium turquoise and shimmery mint green.  If you need to add a bit of shimmer and/or lighten a shade, you can also add in a bit of highlighting powder/shadow.
  • I would suggest using a transition shadow, like Frappe by Makeup Geek (light maple brown matte), to start, before applying the lid colour.
  • You can use the colour in my step #4 in step #3 as well (I used 100 Strokes from MAC), but add a little at a time to build the colour.

IMG_0397To complete my look, my foundation of choice was Neutrogena SkinClearing makeup, followed by Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer. And to make sure the look lasted all day, I used Too Faced Shadow Insurance and Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer.  I also used  QUO Brow Focus in Brunette to darken my brows.  I finished the look with Sephora blush in Healthy Rose and Pasadena liquid lipstick from Ofra.

What do you think?

I love this post and the end result was terrific. I also have a gazillion eyeshadow pins that I have never actually tried. You’ve inspired me try one out too. Just curious – how long did it take compared to your normal routine?

Awww…thanks! It did take me an extra 30 mins, however, that included the time that I stopped to take photos, find colours, and figure out steps. If I did it again, knowing the steps/colours ahead, I don’t think it would have taken much longer then I normally take.

Still it seems like a fun thing to try for a night out.
