Review: Colourpop Lippie Stix (with swatches)

As I mentioned in a recent previous blog, one of my new favorite brands is Colourpop (and not just because they spell “colour” like us Canadians)!  I have purchased their eye shadows, Ultra Matte liquid lipsticks, Ultra Satin liquid lipsticks, Creme Gel eye liners and Lippie Stix (…that is not a typo, they are indeed called “Lippie Stix”).

The Lippie Stix are Colourpop’s modern take on a traditional lipstick, but instead of being short and stubby (like a classic lipstick), they are long and thin.  They are packaged in a white plastic twisty tube, with a lipstick colour matching tip, (and a white cap which is not shown in my photo).

The Lippie Stix come in 8 different finishes: Crème, Matte X, Satin Luxe, Sheer, Satin, Glossy, Matte, and Pearlized.  There is a HUGE selection and I have 11 swatched for you below.

Before getting into the pros, cons, and swatches, I would like to mention that I didn’t see a huge difference between the Creme, Matte and Satin finishes.  Some of the mattes were a bit glossy, some of the satins were slightly creamy – there was no real consistency with the formulas.  However, the sheer formula was definitely different then the others.  As the name implies, they were very glossy and sheer (think tinted lip balm).
(Unfortunately, I don’t have any of the Matte X as they just launched, or the Satin Luxe, Glossy or Pearlized due to their limited selection/colours of those finishes).

ColourPop Lippie Stix Pros:
  • Great selection of vibrant colours
  • They are thick, creamy, and opaque so only one coat is needed
    (of all but the sheer)
  • Easy to apply / easy to remove
  • Only $5 US each (+shipping)
  • The lids/caps are secure
(weird point, I know, but I have lost lipstick lids in my purse before)
ColourPop Lippie Stix Cons:
  • Some colours will not apply if your lips are damp or will apply patchy
(I noticed this particularly with Clique, Chi Chi, and Brunch.  You will see what I mean if you look closely at the image of Brunch below in my inner lower lip)
  • They are not smudge/transfer proof and don’t last after eating
(after eating sushi I was left with a bright lipstick outline)
  • Some colours leave your lips with a reddish tint after removing them
(and strangely not just the red coloured ones)
  • You can only purchase these online, so you can’t test the colours before purchasing
  • The smell is a mix of vanilla and crayons especially the matte colours.
Would I recommend these?

Yes, if you are looking for something fun and affordable.  It’s a good bang for your buck but as the name “lippie stix” suggests, this is not meant to be a serious high end / high quality lip product.  The colours I would suggest you buying are Brink, Lumiere, and Topanga as they all applied beautifully and would look lovely on all skin tones. It’s also worth mentioning that Chi Chi, Topanga and Grunge were definitely the creamiest and most silky to apply.

Do you own any Colourpop Lippie Stix?  Any that you would recommend me trying out?  Any you would suggest me avoiding?

SWATCH TIME!
