Review: Maybelline Master Contour Contouring Kit

IMG_9068[1]

“Master face contouring on the go with this all-in-one palette – contouring brush included.” (maybelline.ca)

While visiting my local Shoppers Drug Mart, I saw the new-ish Facestudio® Master Contour Contouring Kit (in the Maybelline New York section).  There were two palettes (1) Light to Medium (2) Medium to Deep.  Both included a contour/bronzer shade, blush, highlight, and small fluffy angled brush.

Needing a bronzer for contouring, I figured that for $12, “why not buy the palette?”.   I could have picked either of the two palettes, with my skin tone, but the warm peachy toned colours in the Medium to Deep one called my name, so that’s what I went for.

I’ve been using the palette over the past month or two and there is definitely one big pro and one big con.

Firstly, the pro – I LOVE LOVE LOVE this bronzer!  It is the perfect matte warm brown for my olive skin tone.  The colour is build-able so you don’t need to worry about putting too much on and had decent lasting power…not all day, but I didn’t have to re-apply until the evening.

Now the bad news – my biggest issue with this palette is the shimmer. SO MUCH SHIMMER!  I was pleasantly surprised when I first applied the blush.  It had great pigment and the colour reminded me of my all time favourite blush, NARS Orgasm. However, when I got to work, to my surprise, I noticed that my face was covered in shimmer (not so appropriate for a Marketing Manager in the construction industry…yikes!).  I tried to wipe it off but it wasn’t going anywhere.  By the end of the day most of the shimmer was gone (along with all the colour).  I’m not sure if it was the highlight or the blush or a combination, but it was everywhere.

So…would I purchase this again?  Probably not, as I only really liked the bronzer.  However, if you love to sparkle all day, every day…this is the palette for you!

Are there any great drugstore pallets that you have tried?  I’d love to hear about them!

Thanks Molly! Other then Nars Orgasm, I’ve been having difficulty finding great affordable blushes with a satin finish (ie. not matte but not shimmery). Any suggestions?

theBalm blushes are pretty reasonably priced, you can usually get them on sale for $10 and they’re amazing! Aside from that I hear NYX and Milani blushes are amazing!

I was curious about this palette, I’m happy I found your review! I’m not one for shimmer all over my face, I prefer strategic glow lol, so I’ll skip this one. Nice post!

    Is the brush helpful?

Because it’s quite small, I only found it useful with the highlight, however, you could apply the contour shade with it and blend it out with another brush (but it would add an extra step) 🙂
